How Does a Torque Wrench Work?

Multiply force by the length of the wrench to determine the amount of torque. The formula looks like this: force x length = torque.

How to Set a Torque Wrench

Once you have a calibrated wrench, set the desired torque value as follows:

  • Identify the manufacturer’s recommended torque value for the application.
  • Locate the lock on the device to disengage it.
  • Turn the handle to set the target torque value.
  • Rotate the handle clockwise to increase the torque and counterclockwise to decrease it.
  • Tighten the lock to secure the setting.

Once you have locked in the torque value, proceed to the actual task.

How to Tighten a Bolt

To fasten a bolt correctly with a torque wrench, follow these steps:

  • Confirm you have the correct tool size for the job: Verify the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm you are using the optimal size wrench to eliminate misuse and overload situations.
  • Position the wrench: Position the tool on the bolt. Proceed in the clockwise direction to tighten (counterclockwise to loosen) while watching the dial to ensure the desired torque value is achieved.
  • Stop turning the tool: Halt the rotational force once you reach the desired torque value. In some models, a light or beep will alert you when you reach the desired value.
