Happy World Metrology Day!

The quality of the devices and tools we use in our daily lives depends on metrology, the science of measurement. Many industries, including construction, food, electronics, medicine and automotive, use measurements to provide reliable and safe products. From the food we buy to the GPS in our cars, accurate measurements enhance the quality of our lives.

With measurement performing such a critical role in everyday lives, the world uses a unified measuring system to promote fair trade. On May 20 each year, participating countries commemorate the day nations accepted a universal measurement system.

What Is World Metrology Day?

World Metrology Day is an international day marking the signing of the Metre Convention on May 20, 1875. It celebrates the treaty that made the metric system the standard for measuring weight and length across the globe.

The International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) established World Metrology Day in 1999, while the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized the day as an international day in 2023.

At the Metre Convention in 1875, 17 countries, including the U.S., signed the treaty created by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), an organization supervised by CIPM. Thirty-five more countries joined in 1900, with the number rising over the years to over 100 participating nations today.

Besides remembering the signing of the treaty, World Metrology Day serves as a day to raise awareness of metrology and its role in our lives. It also celebrates the scientists, metrologists and calibration technicians who contribute to a precise and accurate world.

World Metrology Day 2025 celebrates the 150th anniversary of the signing of the treaty under the theme “Measurements for all times, for all people.”

The Importance of a Unified Measurement System

The base units of the metric system include meter, second, kilogram, ampere, mole, candela and kelvin. Standardized measuring units facilitate international trade, allowing countries to measure and price goods consistently across regions. Other benefits include:

  • Promoting understanding, accuracy and consistency.
  • Facilitating the easy sharing of findings among scientists across the globe for scientific progress.
  • Boosting collaboration on global projects.
